Jermaine Lamarr Cole, known as J. Cole, is an American rapper and record producer. Born in Germany and raised in Fayetteville, North Carolina, he rose to prominence with his debut mixtape, *The Come Up*, in 2007. Focused on music, Cole signed with Jay-Z's Roc Nation in 2009. He released two critically acclaimed mixtapes, *The Warm Up* and *Friday Night Lights*, in 2009 and 2010 respectively, expanding his fanbase.

2007: Founding of Dreamville Records

In early 2007, during the composition of The Come Up, J. Cole and Ibrahim Hamad established Dreamville Records. Cole wanted an avenue to release his own music and Hamad was interested in starting a record label, which prompted their partnership. Dreamville Records is currently distributed by Interscope Records.
