Resilience and perseverance in the journey of Patrice Evra. A timeline of obstacles and growth.
Patrice Evra is a French former professional footballer renowned as one of the best left-backs of his generation. He captained both Manchester United and the French national team, demonstrating leadership qualities throughout his career. Evra's accomplishments include being named to the PFA Team of the Year three times, as well as earning spots in the FIFPro World XI and UEFA Team of the Year, solidifying his status as a top player. Initially a forward, he transitioned to left-back, showcasing his versatility and adaptability on the field.
On March 24, 2004, Patrice Evra suffered an ankle injury in a match against Real Madrid, causing him to miss two weeks but return for the second leg.
In March 2005, Evra was forced to withdraw from France's friendly against Switzerland due to an injury, leading to William Gallas filling in as a makeshift left-back.
Due to Eric Abidal's return from injury and Domenech preferring Mikaël Silvestre, Evra was not called up for almost two years and missed the 2006 World Cup.
On July 18, 2008, Evra was charged with four counts of improper conduct by the FA, related to an incident in April during a warm-down following a match against Chelsea where he had an altercation with a groundsman. Evra denied the charges, claiming he was racially abused.
On December 5, 2008, Evra was found guilty of improper conduct and handed a four-match ban and a £15,000 fine, due to start on December 22, related to the incident with the Chelsea groundsman.
In 2010, despite facing public ridicule for the World Cup controversy, Evra maintained his desire to continue playing for the French national team.
On June 6, 2015, Evra started for Juventus in the 2015 UEFA Champions League final, which they lost 3–1 to Barcelona, making him the first player to lose four Champions League finals. He also became the first player to lose the final with three different clubs, and the first to lose against the same opponent, Barcelona, on three occasions.
In November 2017, Patrice Evra was released by Marseille and banned from UEFA competition for seven months after kicking a fan before a UEFA Europa League match.
In October 2021, Evra alleged that he was sexually abused by a teacher when he was 13. He said he was interviewed by police regarding the abuse at age 24 but denied it.
In July 2024, Patrice Evra was found guilty by a French court of abandoning his wife and their two children, receiving a suspended 12-month prison sentence. He also owes over £800k in unpaid alimony.
