Trent Thornton is an American professional baseball pitcher currently playing for the Seattle Mariners in MLB. He previously played for the Toronto Blue Jays. Thornton is a professional athlete in the sport of baseball.
In 2015, Thornton was selected by the Houston Astros in the fifth round of the Major League Baseball draft and received a $325,000 bonus upon signing. He debuted with the Low-A Tri-City Valley Cats that summer.
In 2016, Thornton started the season with the High-A Lancaster JetHawks and was promoted to the Double-A Corpus Christi Hooks in July. He finished the season with a combined 10-5 record and a 3.52 ERA.
In 2017, Thornton returned to Corpus Christi for the first three weeks of the season, then moved up to Triple-A Fresno Grizzlies. He pitched to a 9-6 record and a 5.21 ERA in 25 games for the two clubs.
On November 17, 2018, Thornton was traded by Houston to the Toronto Blue Jays for Aledmys Díaz. The Blue Jays added Thornton to their 40-man roster shortly after.
In 2019, Thornton made the Blue Jays' Opening Day roster. He made his MLB debut on March 31 against the Detroit Tigers, pitching five shutout innings with eight strikeouts, setting a franchise record for strikeouts in an MLB debut. He earned his first career win on May 14 against the San Francisco Giants. Thornton ended the season with a 6-9 record and 4.84 ERA in 29 starts, leading the team in starts, innings pitched, and strikeouts.
In 2021, Thornton shifted to a relief role, initially due to injury concerns. He had a 1–3 record and 4.78 ERA with 52 strikeouts over 49 innings. He spent the second half of the season shuttling between the majors and the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons.
On January 13, 2023, Thornton signed a one-year, $1 million contract with the Blue Jays, avoiding salary arbitration.
On July 21, 2023, Thornton was designated for assignment by Toronto following the acquisition of Génesis Cabrera.
On January 11, 2024, Thornton and the Mariners agreed to a one-year $1.2 million contract.
On June 26, 2024, Thornton earned his first MLB save, relieving closer Andrés Muñoz with no outs and the bases loaded, allowing just one inherited runner to score.
