Bay Bridge Series

The Bay Bridge Series, also known as the Battle of the Bay, was a rivalry and series of baseball games between MLB's Oakland Athletics and San Francisco Giants. Named after the Bay Bridge linking Oakland and San Francisco, the winner of the annual series beginning in 2018 received a trophy made from a piece of the original bridge.

1905: Giants Win World Series

In 1905, the New York Giants defeated the Philadelphia Athletics in the World Series with a score of 4-1.

In 1911, the Philadelphia Athletics defeated the New York Giants in the World Series with a score of 4-1.

1958: Giants Move to San Francisco

In 1958, the Giants moved to San Francisco, marking the beginning of their records considered for the Bay Bridge Series.

1968: Athletics Move to Oakland

In 1968, the Athletics moved to Oakland, marking the beginning of their records considered for the Bay Bridge Series through their last season in Oakland in 2024.

October 17, 1989: Earthquake Interruption of the 1989 World Series

On October 17, 1989, minutes before Game 3 of the 1989 World Series, an earthquake measuring 6.9 on the Richter Scale struck the San Francisco Bay Area, causing damage to Candlestick Park and the Oakland Coliseum. The series was delayed for 10 days due to the damage and the emotional impact on the area. A portion of the Bay Bridge also collapsed, but the game may have saved lives by reducing traffic during rush hour.

April 2023: A's Purchase Land Near Allegiant Stadium

In April 2023, after plans for Cisco Field were shut down and an agreement with the City of Oakland couldn't be reached, the A's purchased land near Allegiant Stadium, home of the Las Vegas Raiders, and T-Mobile Arena, home of the Vegas Golden Knights.

July 25, 2023: "Unite the Bay" Protest

On July 25, 2023, during a game at Oracle Park, Athletics and Giants fans chanted "Sell the Team" as part of an event known as "Unite the Bay," hoping to save the Bay Bridge Series. During the final Bay Bridge Series game, Giants and Athletics players made emotional speeches and took souvenirs from the Oakland Coliseum.

August 18, 2024: Final Bay Bridge Series Game

On August 18, 2024, the final Bay Bridge Series game took place, with the Giants winning 4–2.

September 30, 2024: Giants and Athletics Records

As of September 30, 2024, the Giants records are only from 1958 when they moved to San Francisco, and the Athletics records are from 1968 when they moved to Oakland through their last season in Oakland in 2024.

2024: Most Recent Athletics World Series Championship

As of 2024, the Athletics' victory in the 1989 World Series remains their most recent World Series championship.

2024: Conclusion of the Bay Bridge Series

Through the 2024 season, the Athletics had won 76 games, and the Giants had won 72 games. The Bay Bridge Series officially ended in 2024 when the Athletics prepared to move to West Sacramento, California, for the 2025 season.

April 2, 2025: Inaugural Battle of the Bay 2.0

On April 2, 2025, a minor league version of the rivalry called the Battle of the Bay 2.0 was started between the San Jose Giants and the Oakland Ballers. The San Jose Giants won the game 5-2, which was broadcast on KPIX+.

2025: Athletics Temporary Home

In 2025, the Athletics are scheduled to move to West Sacramento, California, as a temporary home until their new stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada, is completed.

2028: Athletics Planned Move to Las Vegas

The Athletics are planning to move to Las Vegas in 2028, after spending time in West Sacramento, due to failed attempts to replace the Oakland Coliseum, effectively ending the Bay Bridge Series and Bay Area series rivalry in 2024. The rivalry will continue as one over Northern California.
