Jared Bednar is a Canadian professional ice hockey coach, currently the head coach of the Colorado Avalanche in the NHL. Prior to his NHL role, he coached the Lake Erie Monsters (AHL), winning the Calder Cup in 2015-16, and the South Carolina Stingrays (ECHL), securing a Kelly Cup championship in 2008-09. Notably, Bednar led the Colorado Avalanche to a Stanley Cup victory in 2022, making him the first coach to have won championships in the ECHL, AHL, and NHL.
On February 28, 1972, Jared Garry Bednar was born. He is a Canadian professional ice hockey coach and former player.
In 1990, Bednar began playing junior hockey with the Saskatoon Blades of the Western Hockey League.
Halfway through the 1995-96 season, Bednar joined the ECHL's South Carolina Stingrays.
In 1999, Bednar played with the Grand Rapids Griffins of the International Hockey League (IHL), accumulating 21 points and 220 penalty minutes in 71 games.
In 2000, Bednar re-joined the South Carolina Stingrays and played two more seasons with the team.
In 2001, Bednar played his last season with the Stingrays.
In 2002, after retiring as a player, Bednar remained with the Stingrays as an assistant coach.
In 2007, Bednar was named the head coach of the South Carolina Stingrays.
In 2008, Bednar's first season as coach saw the Stingrays winning 47 games and reaching the American Conference finals.
In 2009, after winning the Kelly Cup, Bednar stepped down as head coach of the Stingrays to become assistant coach of the Abbotsford Heat of the AHL.
In 2010, Bednar became the head coach of the AHL's Peoria Rivermen.
In 2012, Bednar's time as the head coach of the AHL's Peoria Rivermen concluded.
In 2012, The Columbus Blue Jackets hired Bednar as an assistant coach for their minor league AHL affiliate, the Springfield Falcons.
In 2015, Bednar was promoted to head coach of the Springfield Falcons after serving as an assistant coach for two seasons.
On July 19, 2016, Bednar was rewarded by the Blue Jackets with a two-year contract extension through to the 2018-19 season.
On August 25, 2016, Bednar was named head coach of the Colorado Avalanche of the National Hockey League (NHL), replacing Patrick Roy.
On April 23, 2018, after the Avalanche's first round exit, Bednar was signed to a one-year contract extension.
On July 9, 2019, Bednar signed a two-year contract extension with the Avalanche.
In 2022, Bednar won the Stanley Cup with the Colorado Avalanche, becoming the first coach to win the ECHL, AHL, and NHL trophies (Kelly, Calder, and Stanley Cup, respectively).
On January 21, 2023, Bednar tied Michel Bergeron for the most wins in Nordiques/Avalanche history after a 2-1 shootout win over the Seattle Kraken.
