A blizzard is a severe snowstorm marked by strong, sustained winds and drastically reduced visibility, persisting for several hours. Ground blizzards occur when wind blows already fallen snow. Blizzards can span hundreds or thousands of kilometers.

1972: 1972 Iran Blizzard

In 1972, the deadliest blizzard in recorded history struck Iran, causing 4,000 reported deaths. The blizzard dropped as much as 26 feet of snow, completely covering 200 villages and burying an area the size of Wisconsin.

March 12, 1993: Formation of the Storm of the Century

On March 12, 1993, the Storm of the Century, also known as the Great Blizzard of 1993, formed over the Gulf of Mexico. It later moved through the Eastern United States before dissipating in the North Atlantic Ocean on March 15.

January 2008: 2008 Afghanistan Blizzard

In January 2008, a fierce blizzard struck Afghanistan, causing temperatures to fall to −30 °C. The blizzard resulted in at least 926 deaths and the loss of more than 100,000 sheep and goats, and nearly 315,000 cattle.
