Tony Dokoupil is an American broadcast journalist and author. He is currently the anchor of the CBS Evening News, a position he has held since January 2026. Prior to this role, he co-hosted CBS Mornings. His career also includes time as a news correspondent for NBC News and MSNBC, as well as writing roles at Newsweek and The Daily Beast. He joined CBS in 2016.
On December 24, 1980, Tony Dokoupil was born. He later became a broadcast journalist and author.
In 1992, Tony Dokoupil, along with his mother and stepfather, relocated to Maryland after his father's drug operation gained attention from law enforcement.
In 2002, Tony Dokoupil graduated from George Washington University with a bachelor's degree in business administration, where he also played NCAA Division 1 baseball.
From 2007, Tony Dokoupil was a senior writer at Newsweek and The Daily Beast.
In 2007, Tony Dokoupil left his PhD track fellowship in media studies at Columbia University to pursue a career in journalism.
In 2008, Tony Dokoupil converted to Judaism while engaged to Haas. He wrote about it for The New Republic.
In September 2013, Tony Dokoupil joined NBC News as a senior writer.
On April 1, 2014, Tony Dokoupil released his memoir titled "The Last Pirate: A Father, His Son, and the Golden Age of Marijuana".
In 2015, Tony Dokoupil's first wife, Danielle Haas, filed for divorce. She later relocated with their two children to Israel.
On January 5, 2016, Tony Dokoupil interviewed militia member LaVoy Finicum live on-air during the occupation of Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in Oregon.
In 2016, Tony Dokoupil joined CBS after working as a news correspondent for NBC News and MS NOW, and as a writer for Newsweek and The Daily Beast.
In October 2017, after two years of dating, Tony Dokoupil eloped with fellow broadcast journalist Katy Tur.
On May 6, 2019, Tony Dokoupil was named the new co-anchor of the morning program CBS This Morning.
In September 2024, Tony Dokoupil and Adriana Diaz began hosting CBS Mornings Plus, a new third hour of CBS Mornings.
On September 30, 2024, Tony Dokoupil discussed the Israeli-Palestinian conflict with author Ta-Nehisi Coates on CBS Mornings. The interview received internal criticism for not meeting network standards.
In October 2024, The New York Times described Tony Dokoupil as a rising star at CBS.
On January 27, 2025, John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois debuted on CBS Evening News, reaching about 5.35 million viewers.
In October 2025, Bari Weiss considered Tony Dokoupil to replace the anchor of CBS Evening News.
