SiriusXM Holdings Inc. is an American broadcasting corporation providing satellite and online radio services in the United States and Canada (through Sirius XM Canada). It was formed in 2008 through the merger of Sirius Satellite Radio and XM Satellite Radio, creating SiriusXM Radio. In 2013, SiriusXM Holdings, Inc. was incorporated. In 2020, SiriusXM reorganized, making Sirius XM Radio Inc. a wholly-owned subsidiary of SiriusXM Holdings, Inc.

1988: Formation of American Mobile Satellite Corporation

In 1988, the American Mobile Satellite Corporation (AMSC) was formed, later leading to XM Satellite Radio.

May 18, 1990: Satellite CD Radio Files Petition

On May 18, 1990, Satellite CD Radio, Inc. (SCDR) filed a Petition for Rule Making requesting spectrum to offer digital audio radio service.

1990: Founding of Satellite CD Radio

In 1990, Martine Rothblatt founded Satellite CD Radio in Washington, D.C., petitioning the FCC for satellite radio broadcast frequencies.

April 1992: Rothblatt Resigns

In April 1992, Martine Rothblatt resigned as chairman and CEO of Satellite CD Radio.

November 1992: Margolese Acquires Control

In November 1992, Rogers Wireless co-founder David Margolese acquired control of Satellite CD Radio.

December 15, 1992: FCC Cut-off Date for Satellite DARS Applications

On December 15, 1992, the FCC established a cut-off date for applications proposing satellite DARS.

1998: Panero Served as XM's CEO

September 11, 2001: Service Start Date Postponed

March 2009: MiRGE Interoperable Radio Available

June 17, 2009: Sirius XM App Released for iPhone and iPod Touch

On June 17, 2009, Sirius XM released an application for use on Apple's iPhone and iPod Touch, allowing subscribers to listen to its programming on those devices, although it did not feature all of the programming available to satellite listeners.

March 18, 2015: SiriusXM App Refreshed

February 2016: SiriusXM Offers Radios for Different Environments

2016: FM-6 Put Into Active Service

In 2016, FM-6 was put into active service and officially replaced Sirius originals FM-1 through FM-3 which operated in elliptical orbit. FM-1 through FM-3 were later placed into disposal orbits. With this change, FM-5 and FM-6 exclusively serve the Sirius service.

October 2017: SiriusXM Streaming Available on Connected Devices

As of October 2017, SiriusXM is available for streaming via custom apps on a variety of connected devices including Amazon Alexa and Fire TV, Sonos, PlayStation, Roku, and smart TVs.

2017: Penetration in New Car Market

2021: Settlement Reached in Alvarez v. Sirius XM Radio Inc.

In 2021, a settlement was reached in Alvarez v. Sirius XM Radio Inc. regarding customers with Sirius lifetime subscriptions. All lifetime subscriptions are now for the lifetime of the owner, not the radio unit. Subscriptions can be transferred for $35, and inactive subscriptions can be cancelled for $100.

June 2022: SiriusXM Streaming Added to Xfinity Platforms

In June 2022, SiriusXM streaming was added to Xfinity customers using the cable provider's X1, Xfinity Flex, and XClass TV platforms.
