Rafael Márquez Álvarez, nicknamed "El Káiser," is a Mexican football coach and former player, widely regarded as Mexico's best defender and one of its greatest players. Currently the assistant coach of the Mexico national team, Márquez had a distinguished career as a defender.

In October 2007, Márquez was nominated for the FIFA World Player of the Year award, being the only player from CONCACAF to be nominated.
In 2007, Márquez participated in the CONCACAF Gold Cup and the Copa América with Mexico. He played in the Gold Cup's championship game against the United States, which Mexico lost 2–1.
On 13 December 2008, Márquez played his 200th match for Barcelona in their 2–0 win against Real Madrid.
In April 2009, during Barcelona's Champions League semi-final match against Chelsea, Márquez sustained a knee injury which required surgery, causing him to miss the rest of the season.
In November 2009, Márquez signed a new contract with Barcelona, keeping him at the club until 2012.
